There are several precautions that must be taken when dealing with imminent dangers of this experiment.
1) Mixtures of these materials will form an explosive precipitate when left standing (silver nitride). Mixtures also work best when prepared fresh for each procedure. Any of the unused chemicals should be properly disposed of and the containers rinsed thoroughly with water.
2) Ammonia emits very toxic and irritating fumes. Handle with care around the skin; if contact occurs rinse thoroughly.
3) NITRIC ACID CAN CAUSE VERY PAINFUL BURNS WHEN COMING INTO CONTACT WITH THE SKIN! I speak from experience - I have yellow, peeling blisters on three of my fingers on my right hand.
